Bow and stern thrusters - selection, dimensioning and combining a full set

Your Path to the Maneuvering System

Your Path to the Maneuvering System

Retrofitting a bow or stern thruster is feasible for many boats. To ensure a perfect fit afterward, you should clarify technical questions in advance. On this page, we describe your path to the right bow or stern thruster. We discuss what questions you need to ask yourself beforehand and which transverse drive is right for your application. We also provide tips and tricks for installation.

Choosing the Right Type - Electric or Hydraulic? BOW PRO or Classic DC Motor?

In general, a distinction can be made between hydraulic and electric bow thrusters. We are happy to advise you on hydraulic bow thrusters upon request. Please contact us. For electric maneuvering systems, retrofitting is generally straightforward.

This page offers the classic DC bow and stern thrusters from VETUS, as well as the modern BOW PRO systems (brushless motors). The main difference in application is that BOW PRO systems can be used continuously for long periods, and the classic motors are intended for short bursts. BOW PRO systems operate steplessly, allowing for slight overdimensioning without issues.

Classic DC Bow and Stern Thruster BOW

  • 12, 24, or 48 volts
  • Simple operation with buttons or joystick (On/Off and Port/Starboard)
  • Variants from 25 kgf to 285 kgf
  • 2-4 minutes continuous or combined in an hour
  • Can be combined with stern tube for stern thruster
  • Maintenance/Replacement of carbon brushes needed
  • Variants: Explosion-proof for explosive environments
  • Variant: Retractable bow version

BOW PRO Proportional Brushless Bow and Stern Thrusters

  • 12, 24, or 48 volts
  • Simple proportional stepless operation with joystick (On/Off and stepless Port/Starboard)
  • Variant: with Lock & Hold function
  • Variants from 30 kgf to 320 kgf
  • Continuous operation possible
  • Can be combined with stern tube for stern thruster
  • No regular maintenance required
  • Variants: Explosion-proof for explosive environments
  • Variant: Retractable bow version

Selection and Dimensioning

For selection and dimensioning (initial choice), the following graphics can be referred to. Crucial are the distance to the pivot point (for sailing ships, the keel) and the wind attack surface, before and after the pivot point. The brushless BOW PRO variants can also be slightly overdimensioned if in doubt. For standard DC motors, overdimensioning is disadvantageous. When choosing by tunnel diameter, the large overlap area can also be seen. If you are unsure, please use the opportunity to contact us.
